Community computer lab
Visitors and area residents may apply to the Temple University Libraries Community Computer Program at the Charles Library. The program offers 10 computers with Microsoft Suite software, a black and white cash-operated printer, a scanner, and a microfilm reader to area residents and other visitors. These community members, visitors, and Temple alumni are permitted two hours per day on one of the computers; additional time may be granted on a limited basis at the discretion of library staff. Temple University Library databases are also available on these computers.
To apply, visitors must be 18 years or older and should come to the Charles service desk with a valid, government-issued photo ID and ask for an application. Guests must provide a valid email address on the application. The library staff will photocopy the visitor's ID and submit the application and ID photocopy to Temple Police for approval. Most applications are approved within two weeks and cards may be picked up at the library service desk.
Temple alumni may also use the Charles' community computers. Alumni must first obtain their alumni photo ID at the Alumni Services office, then come to the library service desk so a staff member can add a barcode to the alumni ID. Alumni may then logon to a community computer with the barcode.
In signing their application, guests agree to abide by Temple University Libraries Community Standards. Failure to abide by the Community Standards may result in termination of library privileges.
Student Tech Assistants are on duty during the Community Computer Lab hours. These students can help guests with various computer programs from email to Microsoft Word to library databases. In addition, the library offers guests the use of assistive devices, such as the Ubi Duo 2 -- a two way communication system for the hearing-impaired or non-verbal, and the Optelec Clear View C Speech Reader -- a desktop computer for the vision-impaired.
